Metaplanet transferred a huge amount of Bitcoin (BTC) on August 12, 2026. This transfer was observed by on-chain data analytics platforms and pushed fresh scrutiny about whether the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company sold part of its holdings.
Today, August 13, 2026, CEO Simon Gerovich clarified on social media platform X and said that the transfers (5,014 BTC) were a routine custody operation and that no Bitcoin was sold. The company continues to hold 43,000 Bitcoin, while the entire transfer of roughly $322 million cost approximately $8 in network fees.
We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours. This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC.
All of our addresses are published, which is why the transfers were observable in real time.…

Metaplanet Says 5,014 BTC Transfer Was a Routine Operation
On-chain monitoring reported 3,881 Bitcoin being transferred over a three-hour period. Lookonchain estimated that portion at roughly $247 million. Although the movements themselves did not ensure that the Bitcoin had been sold. Gerovich’s statement later confirmed that a total amount moved over the 24-hour period was 5,014 Bitcoin, and also confirmed that the movement was an internal custody transfer.
The transfer emphasizes how large Bitcoin treasury movements can be tracked when companies disclose their addresses. It also shows that an on-chain transfer does not ensure that a company has sold its holdings. The differentiation between a transfer and a sale is crucial for organizations operating large Bitcoin treasuries. Bitcoin can be shifted between custodians, cold storage, or other organization-controlled addresses without beneficial ownership.
In Metaplanet’s case, the location of the latest transfers remain under the company’s custody, as per Gerovich. Metaplanet’s reported 43,000 Bitcoin balance also remains consistent with the organization’s stated treasury position. The information shows no Bitcoin sale connected to the newest movement, meaning that the alleged transfer does not represent a realized reduction in its holdings.
Metaplanet Faces Unrealized Loss as Bitcoin Treasury Remains Unchanged
While Metaplanet assures that no Bitcoin was sold, the organization’s treasury remains below its reported average acquisition price. Lookonchain estimated that Metaplanet acquired 43,000 Bitcoin at an average price of about $96,191 per Bitcoin. With Bitcoin trading near $63,000, Lookonchain estimated that Metaplanet was carrying an unrealized loss of $1.4 billion.
This information is a mark-to-market estimate rather than a realized loss reported by Metaplanet. As mentioned, the company did not sell the Bitcoin during the latest transfers.
The focal point remains that the organization continues to hold Bitcoin and has not realized a loss through a sale. Metaplanet remains the third largest public Bitcoin treasury, according to the supplied Bitcoin Treasuries ranking. Strategy leads with 840,447 Bitcoin, while 21 Capital holds 43,514 Bitcoin. Metaplanet’s 43,000 Bitcoin balance leaves it only 514 Bitcoin behind 21 Capital.
Moreover, apart from accumulating BTC, Metaplanet launched a 4 billion yen Bitcoin venture program in March to invest in financial infrastructure in Japan. It also plans to explore the Bitcoin-centric credit products and securities business. These initiatives provide potential uses for Bitcoin held under company custody. Although Metaplanet does not relate the recent movement to any financing product or monetary activity. The company has also staved speculation over its management option pools.
Additionally, Metaplanet’s broader growth story depends on keeping Japanese interest rates low and successfully carrying out its credit strategy, rather than simply issuing shares when its MNAV is higher. Also, there is a possibility that options pool can make it harder to follow a strategy that relies heavily on issuing new shares.
For now, the key point from the large on-chain movement is that Metaplanet’s Bitcoin treasury has not plunged. The 5,014 Bitcoin moved between custodial addresses while the organization continues to report 43,000 Bitcoin holdings. Future disclosures will show whether the balance shifts, but the linear transfer does not indicate a Bitcoin sale.
