The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has released the agenda for the first meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee, scheduled for August 20 in Washington, with crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets among the main topics.
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig announced the agenda on August 13 as the agency prepares to bring committee members together to discuss emerging technologies and financial markets.
The crypto session is set to examine the development of digital-asset regulation, including regulatory uncertainty and how agency action could complement future congressional legislation. Prediction markets and AI will also receive dedicated sessions. The meeting itself does not establish new CFTC rules, and the committee’s role remains advisory.
CFTC Sets Crypto, AI and Prediction Markets On August Agenda
The Innovation Advisory Committee will hold its inaugural meeting on August 20 at 1 p.m. ET in Washington. The agenda covers three broad areas: crypto asset regulation, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets. The meeting is scheduled to be available online to the public.
The crypto discussion is titled “Crypto’s Regulatory Evolution: From Uncertainty to Clarity.” According to the published agenda, members will examine the development of crypto markets, earlier regulatory approaches, and the growth of state licensing regimes.
The discussion will also address the absence of a comprehensive federal market-structure framework, overlapping jurisdictions, and differing regulatory interpretations.
Another part of the crypto session will consider how existing statutory authority could be used while Congress works on broader digital-asset legislation. The timing places the discussion in the context of the stalled CLARITY Act, which did not advance in the Senate before the August recess.
Recent reporting has identified the relationship between agency action and future legislation as one of the issues likely to receive attention at the meeting. The committee’s AI session will examine the use of artificial intelligence in trading, compliance, surveillance, and risk management.
Members are also expected to discuss autonomous financial systems and the intersection between AI and crypto markets. The CFTC has previously used advisory committees to seek outside views on technology and its implications for derivatives and commodity markets.
Prediction markets make up the third major part of the agenda. The session will examine questions involving federal and state jurisdiction, product design, exchange requirements, market surveillance, potential manipulation, and customer protection. Those issues arise as prediction-market operators continue to face questions about how event contracts are treated under federal and state law.

The CFTC has already taken a position in federal court asserting exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets covered by the Commodity Exchange Act. The CFTC’s February statement on prediction-market jurisdiction provides a useful example of the agency’s position ahead of the committee’s broader discussion.
The range of subjects means the August meeting will cover several areas where technology and financial-market regulation overlap. However, the published agenda does not state that the meeting will result in immediate regulatory changes.
Advisory Committee To Provide Input As Regulatory Questions Continue
The Innovation Advisory Committee was established to provide the CFTC with outside advice and recommendations on issues involving technology, markets, and financial policy. Its membership includes representatives from crypto companies, financial institutions, exchanges, market infrastructure firms, and prediction-market businesses.
The committee’s role is important to distinguish from that of the commission itself. Its discussions and recommendations can inform the CFTC’s work, but they do not automatically become agency policy or regulations. The committee operates as an advisory body, with final decisions remaining with the commission.
The August meeting also comes as the CFTC continues its separate work on digital assets. In March, the agency announced an Innovation Task Force covering crypto assets, AI, and prediction markets.
The latest meeting agenda has drawn attention from crypto-market observers. A recent Reddit discussion about the August 20 CFTC meeting focused on the agency’s planned discussions around crypto regulation, AI-driven trading, and prediction markets. The discussion is useful as an example of industry and investor commentary, but it does not represent CFTC policy.
Members of the public can submit written comments related to the meeting through August 27. The CFTC has also noted that the agenda may be adjusted to accommodate additional committee priorities.
As of now, the immediate development is the committee’s first scheduled meeting and the subjects placed on its agenda. Any subsequent recommendations or regulatory actions would depend on CFTC decisions and developments in Congress.
