The plan would deploy LDO paired with wrapped staked ETH into a Uniswap v2 style liquidity position owned by the Aragon Agent. If the community backs the idea, implementation could begin in the first quarter of 2026.
Lido DAO Proposes a New Liquidity Buyback Mechanism
The proposal treats buybacks as a liquidity engineering exercise. Instead of simple market purchases that remove tokens and leave thin markets behind, the mechanism would acquire LDO in measured clips and pair the acquired tokens with wstETH to seed a persistent LP position. That LP would sit under DAO control and collect small fees, while the underlying LDO would be effectively taken out of free circulation.
Trigger conditions are built to be conservative. The framework only activates when ETH trades above a USD threshold and when annualized treasury revenue exceeds a set minimum. Initial parameters set ETH at greater than $3,000 and fee revenue above $40 million in USD terms. When conditions are satisfied, the DAO would allocate a portion of surplus staking inflows to buybacks, up to a rolling cap of $10 million across 12 months.
Execution cadence matters. The architects suggest multiple smaller trades rather than a few large ones. Using repeated clips of roughly $350,000 could keep slippage near or below 2 percent, according to referenced slippage projections. Larger clips would reduce gas costs but raise the risk of more pronounced price impact. The proposal explicitly balances gas efficiency against order book stress.
A notable feature is anti-cyclical discipline. The mechanism expands buybacks in bullish periods when ETH and revenue are high, and it pauses activity when market conditions deteriorate. That design is intended to preserve treasury resilience during downturns while returning value to token holders when the DAO is generating meaningful surplus.
Technically, the plan leans on several building blocks. NEST order execution, EasyTrack orchestration, and Stonks v2 routing would work together to acquire LDO and then pair it on chain with wstETH. An initial Aragon Treasury seed would mint the opening LP position, and the LP token would be held by the Aragon Agent contract, keeping governance control at the DAO level. Fees accruing to the pool would flow back to the treasury in small increments.
Proponents point to a clear benefit: improved on-chain depth. Even modest additions to LP size can materially reduce price impact for future trades, the proposal argues. That would not only make LDO easier to use in DeFi flows but also reduce friction for market participants who need predictable execution.
Governance observers flag pitfalls. The supply profile of LDO could be a bottleneck. In stressed conditions, aggressive buybacks might strain available liquidity and require tapping off-chain order books, which raises execution risk. Implementation complexity is another concern. Compared with direct buys, the LP route requires more engineering, careful testing, and operational safeguards to avoid failures or unintended market effects.
Supporters counter that one-off complexity is preferable to long-term thin markets. They say that a set-and-forget LP position combines scarcity and utility in a single tool. The proposal also allows for increased frequency of executions over time, which would smooth slippage and make the program more efficient.
The proposal has been posted for community feedback as a scaffold ahead of a Snapshot vote. Contributors are asked to comment on parameters, alternative mechanisms, and edge cases. If the community approves, the DAO would move from discussion to implementation, with specific engineering timelines to follow.
The debate now centers on tradeoffs between simplicity and structural impact. The proposal aims to link supply management to practical liquidity improvements.
